I SURVIVED....the first day of school
It had finally come. Today was the day. It could be one of the most wonderful or most utterly tragic days of her young, teenage life. It started off like any other morning....
Who am I kidding? It did not start off like any other morning, 'cause I had to get up before the sun's first alarm had even gone off. It was okay though, after a restless night of tossing, turning, praying, reading and checking my alarm two billion times, I was awake and ready to start the day.
If anything, I think today was scarier and harder for my little brothers. It was Jed's first time in a huge school building, first time riding the bus, first time being in a real classroom and first time being forced to brave the bathroom (without the aid of his trusted "ducky" or "mater" ones) all by himself. Since Jed isn't quite expressive, I can only assume his day went splendidly because; First, he made it home in one piece. Second, he ate all his lunch, and third, he was excited to go to bed so he could play with the dinosaurs again. I think that means he had fun. Levi had a great day and was elated that he had several of his closest friends in his class.
So all in all, any minor complaints I have about today are really just that; minor complaints. Shockingly, I had a relatively good day. My bus got to school roughly forty-five minutes late (most buses were though) and on account of that, first block was about thirty minutes tops. My first block teacher is intimidating but is also incredibly funny and as long as I stick to the rules, I should have a good time in that class.
(For you homeschoolers, block classes can be anywhere from 90-120 minutes long. Last year I had only year long classes that were 50 minutes long, but, as the name suggests, it took a whole year to complete that class. With block classes you are essentially completing a year long class in one semester, hence why we only have four classes now)
My second class was amazing. I'm still figuring out the people and deciding if I like any of them, but I really like my teacher. I think it will be my favorite class, which, noting that it's my lit/comp class, that's not really surprising. One notable difference that separates this lit class (and indeed, it seems to be a "lit" class) from the one I had last year was that we aren't going to do much work digitally. This teacher says that he would rather us actually write out our assignments and notes because it not only is proven to help you remember, but it's a literature class, one should expect to do copious amounts of writing. I like this idea, but those who've had the privilege (or misfortune) of reading my handwriting know that I will need some work on this area. Not to fear though, at my side as I type this I have a kid's writing tablet that I will use strenuously as I adventure to mending and recreating my handwriting.
My third class is Spanish and I had the same teacher last year. I like her well enough and I'd like to think the feeling is mutual. I enjoy this class a lot and hope it will be fun. I'm also happy to report that I have some acquaintances in that class so I won't be a loner.
Lunch was the thing I was dreading the most but actually wasn't that bad. Through texting several friends I was able to find out that two of my friends had the same lunch as me. As I was sitting comfortably with people I liked, I looked around and couldn't stop myself from people watching. I saw so many little cute baby freshies (I can say that now, I'm bigger than them) and other people looking completely lost and confused. I talked to a few people or accommodated as they overran our table and we had to move, but it really put my situation into perspective. I was in a changing environment, but at least it wasn't completely new. I knew what the lunch lines and tables looked like with people in them. I knew how insane the hallways would be and was prepared for it. They weren't. I'm really grateful that last semester I had people who showed me the ropes and helped me out and as the year's progress, I intend to return the favor by helping out other newbies.
Anyways, my last class was low-key boring. The teacher is great, so maybe it was just the fact that I was tired, but I found it quite mundane. Hopefully my outlook on that class will change.
The bus ride home was longer than usual, but I didn't mind. Sometimes I think that during the summer I missed that time to just breathe, listen to music, read and think. I think that's gonna be one of my favorite parts of the day.
So, that was the first day of school. Sorry that this was quite extensive lol I guess compiling my notebook page of scribblings (taken before and after each class, yes, nerd) turns into a lot more when you try to type it up.
Until Friday my friends,
Linnea Rainbow
